A dozen of the Kossar’s black and white cookies – the lemon-flavored, cake-like cookie with half chocolate, half vanilla icing that has been a Lower East Side bakery staple since long before the Grand Street institution opened in 1936. Made in the oldest bialy bakery in the United States, these are the classic NYC black and whites: soft, yielding crumb, a clean line down the center where chocolate meets vanilla, the kind of cookie that the LES bakery counter has always kept alongside the savory.
